My Journey to Becoming a Recommended Creator on Notion

How Passion and Persistence Led Me to Recognition in the Notion Community

My initial introduction to Notion was somewhat unremarkable. I tried it for the first time about three years ago but didn’t quite grasp the hype around it.

However, a year ago, I revisited Notion for work purposes, and this time, I truly understood its potential. It was a game-changer in terms of organization and productivity.

Initial Steps to Template Creation

My journey into creating Notion templates began out of necessity.

I found myself in need of specific templates that simply didn’t exist yet and rather than waiting for someone else to create them, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

My first creation were a Portfolio I needed to share the case studies I worked on to show to potential employers:

Once I realized that these templates could be useful to others, I shared them, hoping others would find them useful, that’s how it all started.

Initially, I focused on templates that I needed for my workflow. As I received requests and suggestions from my circle and the wider internet community, I expanded my offerings to include those as well.

Challenges and Learning

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was getting accustomed to how databases and formulas work in Notion. They operate quite differently from other software like Google Sheets. Learning this new way of doing things — and even thinking about things — was a significant challenge.

To overcome these obstacles, I leveraged my background in data analytics, which provided a solid foundation. Being a quick learner and having a natural curiosity also played a crucial role.

Growth and Development

Gathering feedback and iterating on my templates was key to my growth. I studied what other creators did and asked questions in the Notion Circle community and on LinkedIn. Whenever I felt stuck, I turned to blogs and YouTube videos.

The Notion community is incredibly supportive, and I always found solutions when I needed them.

Achieving Recognition

The moment I found out I was featured as a recommended creator was quite serendipitous. I was browsing the Notion templates site for a new template when I scrolled down and saw my name in the featured creator section. It was a thrilling surprise!

I believe that the sheer volume and usefulness of my recent templates played a significant role in this recognition. Users found value in my work, and that’s what ultimately caught Notion’s attention.

Advice for Aspiring Creators

For those just starting, my advice is simple:

Create what you would want to find on Notion and be passionate about it.

Play around with Notion, experiment, and you’ll discover features and possibilities you didn’t know existed.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid:

  1. Overcomplicating Templates: It’s easy to get carried away with features, but simplicity often makes templates more user-friendly and effective.

  2. Ignoring Feedback: User feedback is invaluable. Ignoring it can result in missing out on opportunities to improve.

  3. Neglecting Design: Functional templates are great, but they should also be visually appealing to enhance user experience.

Top Three Tips for Creating High-Quality, Valuable Notion Templates:

  1. User-Centered Design: Always keep the end-user in mind. Create templates that are intuitive and solve real problems.

  2. Continuous Improvement: Regularly update your templates based on feedback and new insights. Stay engaged with your audience.

  3. Clear Documentation: Provide clear instructions and examples within your templates. This helps users understand and utilize them effectively.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, I plan to continue creating new templates and releasing bundles of my most popular ones at discounted rates. This way, more people can afford and benefit from them.

Additionally, I’m considering offering personalized consulting services to help individuals and businesses optimize their Notion setups.

Currently, I’m excited about two new templates I’ve just released. One is a ‘Gamify your Life’ template with cool features to make daily tasks more engaging:

Gamify your Life

The other is a template designed to help deal with addiction, inspired by my own experiences:

Addiction Recovery Notion Template

I hope these templates can and will make a positive impact on users’ lives.

My journey as a Notion template creator has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m grateful for the recognition and support from the Notion community.

If you’re passionate about creating and sharing, there’s a place for you in this community too.
