Tarot has been a source of insight, reflection, and mystery for centuries, but it often requires a physical deck and a degree of expertise to navigate its intricacies. With this in mind, I set out to create something revolutionary: an Automated Cross Tarot Spread template for Notion. My goal was to merge the tradition of tarot with the innovation of technology, creating a tool that is accessible, visually stunning, and deeply intuitive.

Bringing this vision to life was both a technical and artistic journey. The first step was to craft the illustrations for the cards. As I am not an artist myself, I used a combination of AI tools and manual edits to create imagery that captures the essence of tarot while embracing a unique, modern aesthetic:

1. Image Descriptions: I began by analyzing the iconic Rider-Waite Tarot deck, feeding images of each card into ChatGPT to generate detailed descriptions of their visual elements. These descriptions focused purely on the imagery without referencing their symbolic meanings.

2. AI-Generated Art: Using MidJourney, I transformed these descriptions into vivid illustrations, employing a “Cybernetic Surrealism” style with vibrant, iridescent colors to give the cards a contemporary, dreamlike feel.

3. Manual Refinements: Each AI-generated image was manually refined to ensure accuracy and consistency. I added essential details and symbolic elements to maintain the authenticity and depth associated with tarot cards.

4. Final Touches: To complete the cards, I added names and numbers, preserving the structure and familiarity of traditional tarot.

The next step was to bring the cards to life within Notion. By leveraging Notion’s database and formula functionalities, I developed a randomization system that enables users to generate spreads effortlessly. This system simulates the randomness and spontaneity of drawing cards from a physical deck. (You can read more about the technical aspect of this system here.)

The result is an automated tarot spread template that combines the authenticity of traditional tarot with the ease and accessibility of digital tools.
